A bootstrap argument exploits some sort of nonlinear feedback loop in a system (typically via application of Duhamel's formula) to allow a weak hypothesis (the bootstrap hypothesis) to imply a conclusion which prima facie appears to be strictly stronger.

When combined with a continuity argument, one can often dispense with the bootstrap hypothesis (perhaps after verifying that hypothesis in a single special case) and conclude the conclusion unconditionally.
