Proposal for updating the page
In the form of an update of the current page, the following proposes the use of bibliography templates and some new conventions. Basically, the idea is to keep the bibliography pages having single lines, so that one can make a reference list for any page, by including (or transcluding) the bib page. This is done by Template:Bibitem. Another thing is that there are new subcategories to Bibliography, called Articles, Books, Preprints etc., and corresponding new templates. See Einstein equations and references therein as an example.
If there is no objection in a few days I will update the current page as proposed and start updating the bibliography pages using the new templates. Comments and suggestions are most welcome. Tumur 03:23, 25 August 2008 (EDT)
Reference format
DispersiveWiki gives each reference a unique page to contain the bibliographic data to that page, together with any relevant links and other annotations. Example: (Cq1952).
The category Bibliography contains all the bibliography pages currently available at DispersiveWiki, arranged in subcategories Articles, Books, Preprints etc.
Citing a reference
To refer to a reference in any other article:
- Enclose the name for that reference in double brackets (just as with any other link). Example: This result is proven in [[KnPoVe1989]]. => This result is proven in KnPoVe1989.
- In References section, enter the Bibitem template with the name of the reference as the parameter. Example: {{Bibitem|HuKaMar1977}} => [HuKaMar1977] T. Hughes, T. Kato, J. Marsden. Well-posed quasilinear second-order hyperbolic systems with applications to nonlinear elastodynamics and general relativity. Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal., 63 (1977), 273-294. MathSciNet, arXiv.
See Einstein equations as an example (have a look at the code by clicking the edit button).
If you do not know the name for the reference, you may search for it using the in-built wiki search box. Alternatively, you may visit the Bibliography category page or the legacy bibliography page to hunt for the page; see also our naming conventions for references.
Updating a reference
To update or correct an existing reference, simply visit that reference page and edit it as you would with any other page. Many existing references need to be re-edited using the bibliography templates, such as Artilce, Book, Preprint.
We also welcome annotations or commentary on any given reference (e.g. mention of related, prior, or subsequent work, etc.), which can also be placed on its discussion page. If one wants to write annotations or commentary on the reference page itself, one has to write it in between the tags <nowiki> and </nowiki>, in order not to make these appear in the reference lists of other articles.
If a reference becomes published, the reference page may need to be moved in accordance with our naming conventions. This can be easily accomplished using the "move" tab, or one can edit the page and enter the code #REDIRECT [[new name]]. It may be necessary to use the "What links here" tool to find all pages which refer to that reference, and update the links accordingly (though links to the previous name will still be redirected correctly).
Creating a new reference
If you wish to add a new reference to DispersiveWiki, please perform the following steps.
- Check if the reference already exists somewhere, using the in-built search function or by visiting the Bibliography category page.
- If no reference page exists, determine what name the reference should be assigned using our naming conventions.
- Enter that name into the search box, and click on the "create this page" link. Alternatively, link to that reference from a page which would cite that reference, click on that link, and then begin editing.
- Copy the relevant fragment from the appropriate bibliography and categorization templates, paste it into the editor, and enter in the bibliographic data. You may wish to inspect the source for an existing reference (e.g. HuKaMar1977 and then click edit) to get some idea of how to do this, and how to perform basic markup such as italicization and bold.
Currently, we have the following bibliography templates:
- Article - The template for journal articles, to be used in combination with the article categorization template.
- Incollection - The template for articles in collection, in proceedings, and for book chapters, to be used in combination with the incollection categorization template
- Book - The template for books, to be used in combination with the book categorization template
- Preprint - The template for preprints or technical reports, to be used in combination with the preprint categorization template
